  • Sculptorul Alexandru Pamfil

    Sculptor Alexandru Pamfil

... "He works with devotion and perseverance, daringly approaches the portrait, the figurative or abstract composition, the relief and alto-relief, uses to the same extent the materials which are available: plaster, wood, marble, stone, bronze, duralumin. And what's more interesting and worth mentioning is the fact that, when it comes to metal, he moulds his works himself, then he polishes them, giving them their final shapes.

Starting from what Pamfil has showed so far, from what we've seen in his studio (and we've seen plenty), we can say, without thinking we might be wrong, that the sculptor is a restless, relentless spirit, always searching, wondering why, dealing with problems to which he finds original plastic solutions. His artistic approach is that of a man who, with means specific to sculpture, shapes out a universe populated by sometimes beautiful beings, sometimes strange beings, the former conveying calmness, tranquility, joy, and hope, while the others - restlessness, doubt, fear.

If for quite a while he was concerned with the portrait, achieving a genuine gallery of characters ("Mircea cel Batran", "Archbishop Melchisedec Stefanescu", "Mihail Sadoveanu", "Avram Iancu", "N. Leonard", "Scholar", "Ancuta", "Sergiu" a.s.o.), lataly he is been more and more attracted towards semiabstract compositions - the result of the artist's endeavours to express the contemporary man's worries. A number of compositions in this category are called "Shadows", "Dialogue", "Metamorphosis", "Duet", "Screen", "Conflict" and are dominated by an obvious mystery, suggested both by the names of the sculptures and by their plastic transposition. The artist somewhat gives up round shapes and volumes in favour of prolonged, angular ones, which makes characters look fleshless, slightly expressionistic, better translating the inner tensions of the human being, his anxiety and uncertainty. His ronde-bosses are shorn of details, revealing to the art lover as a synthesis of essential information, able to acquire meanings which only metaphor or symbol can suggest.

Stubbornly willing to achieve his artistic credo, using various techniques and materials, Alexandru Pamfil is going along an aesthetic route which places him among the ones meant to be remembered. Him creation, we're sure, will be spoken of, quite a lot." .....
